Wildspace & BTCV Green Gym workdays

Lewisham's Wildspace Project is working in partnership with BTCV Green Gym. We offer opportunities for you to improve your fitness by doing practical environmental conservation activities in Local Nature Reserves. It's free, fun and no experience is needed. We cater for a range of abilities and there are usually a variety of tasks to carry out, children under 16 are welcome but should be accompanied by an adult. We provide safety equipment, tools and refreshments and have a mid-session tea break. We ask that you wear old warm cloths, sturdy footware and bring a waterproof. Please join in and see how you could become fitter and healthier by doing something positive for you and for your local environment. PLEASE NOTE that BTCV Lewisham Green Gym sessions take place every Monday and every Thursday, but only sessions on LNRs have been listed here. The Greenwich Rangers

The Greenwich Rangers offer a variety of events on Local Nature Reserves like healthy walks, nature rambles or meeting the animals of Maryon Wilson Park. But, they can also take private bookings and tailor events to suit schools or groups over 12 people, whether it's for children, adults or those with disabilities the Rangers will work with you so you can get the most out of our Local Nature Reserves.

Greenwich Rangers-Healthy Walks Oxleas Woods

Come and enjoy the health and social benefits of walking in a free, friendly and informative atmosphere. Improve your health, breath fresh air and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in Oxleas ancient woodlands. Please come and join the Greenwich Rangers to make your own way to better health, your legs are after all the pumps to your heart and it is easy to feel the difference walking makes! We meet every Thursday morning at 10AM by the café on the meadow (off Shooters Hill) and plan to take a brisk walk followed by refreshments at the café. The session will last about an hour. Healthy walks in Lewisham & Greenwich

There are lots of fun healthy walks based in Lewisham or Greenwich, so take the opportunity to find out where your local walk is, come along, meet new people and try it. To find out about the walks please ring for:

Greenwich Rangers-Animal tours

The animal-park is situated in Maryon Wilson Park and consists of three open fenced areas with shelters for various animals and an enclosed area containing buildings for housing the smaller animals. The animals include deer, sheep, ponies, pigs, goats, rabbits, chinchillas, terrapins, guinea pigs, geese, chickens, guinea fowl, mice, rats, peacocks and a cat. The nearest gate to the animal pens is the Flamsteed Road entrance. Free, public tours of the park and its animals are run by the Greenwich Rangers and take place every Wednesday and three times a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) in the school holidays. A picnic and demonstration feeding area is in one of the pens for when tours take place, the tours are extremely popular with local children and families so do try and come early.

Practical/Environmental Conservation Workdays

Workdays are run in both Boroughs, they are free, friendly and fun. It is a great opportunity to meet people, find out about your area, learn new practical skills and make a positive contribution to your local environment. Children are welcome but should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Gloves, tools and refreshments are provided but please wear old warm cloths, stout shoes/boots and bring a waterproof. If it is your first time please call one of the organisers so that they can provide you with any additional info and look out for you on the day.

  • Sunday 4th June 2006 (11.00 am) Friends of Burnt Ash Pond - Open Hour. Burnt Ash is one of the oldest ponds in Lewisham, but is rarely enjoyed by the public due to its somewhat obscure location. Brimming with amphibian & invertebrate wildlife, the site is well worth a visit. The pond is located off Winn Rd in Melrose Clse, SE12.

Beckenham Place Park's Visitor Centre is crammed with fascinating information, artefacts and exhibits documenting the site's diverse history and ecology. Friendly and well-informed voluntary staff are also happy to chat to you about the Park and to answer any questions you may have (... within reason!). The Centre is located in the 18th century mansion house at the top of the drive from the main gate (on Beckenham Hill Rd). The café/bar will be open downstairs.   • Sunday 11th June 2006 (10.00 am) Greenwich Rangers - Nature Walk, Oxleas Woods. Enjoy nature? Come, appreciate and learn about Oxleas extensive ancient woodlands by joining our nature walk held every second Sunday of the month. John Beckham, Head Ranger and bird enthusiast, leads this nature ramble through the woods where it is possible to see a rich assemblage of tree & shrub species, fungi, flora, a diverse and interesting insect fauna and good bird population. The walk is free and everybody is welcome, please wear stout walking shoes, as the paths can get muddy. Meet by the café on the meadow.
